UNIVERSITY SCHEDULE
REVISED CLASS SCHEDULE
COURSE GOALS
We try to put the SUBJECT (English as a Specific Purpose for Designers) at the centre of our classroom, and each participant - student and teacher both - has something to contribute about the subject and to share with each other. We will form a class community using The Four C's: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking (창의성, 협업, 의사 소통, 비판적 사고).
|
This Design EAP will focus on improving students’ target/second language (English) by utilizing the Four Skills approach and metacognition (메타인지), around design and design-related topics. Students will learn how to effectively Listen and Read (input 입력) and will respond with Speaking and Writing (output산출), on the main theme of ‘DESIGN’: design history, design vocabulary, design principles, design fields of study and career, and design tasks. We examine different facets of design (graphic design, fashion design, product design, industrial design, textile design, architectural design, branding design, etc.) We will focus on the similarities and distinctions between the ‘natural world’ and the ‘built world’, and between the Creator and humans as sub-creators, with an innate desire to imitate and innovate. |
In terms of skills: presentation skills will be modeled and practiced. A scaffolded approach to essay writing will be provided and students will be guided through best-practice steps, from mindmapping/brainstorming through thesis statement creation to subtopic paragraph writing. Mistakes will be expected, respected, and corrected as necessary. Many hands-on design tasks will be provided, with which students can engage, practice, and utilize all English competencies. Students will be encouraged to analyse designed objects using the vocabulary and principles presented; to apply their acquired knowledge in multiple design-themed projects throughout the semester; to engage with preparing for academic tasks, presenting/submitting those tasks, and analyzing the result and feedback of those tasks; to continually use the content and topics of the class material to exercise their second language abilities in both input and output; eliciting and discussing their opinions on the topics presented, and finally to integrate their Christian faith and the philosophies of design into an ‘artist’s statement’ or ‘designer’s principle’.
STUDENT GOALS
Students will have effective precis, writing, presentation, and discussion skills modeled and supported in their target/second language (English), and will have opportunity to practice and improve each of those skills in their target language. Students will be expected to work well individually and in groups, whether within class time or on their own. Both tasks and assignments will be provided, and students must use the allotted time efficiently to complete them to facilitate the learning process. Students will be expected to read, respond to, and discuss the listed material as per the course syllabus/schedule. All students will participate in verbal/oral discussions during class time, will prepare and present short analyses of designers/designed objects, and design several projects of their own outside of class time. Independent thought, initiative, responsibility for their own learning, and metacognition are all expected from students. Students will collect and come away with a creative portfolio of handouts, projects, new vocabulary and design philosophies. All students will engage with a variety of design traditions & philosophies, and craft their own final artist’s statement/designer’s principle arising from their faith as it informs and shapes their personal philosophy of design.
