Full Instructions
1. Click the button above or this link to watch the lecture on the Natural and Built World from your professor.
2. Think about how the natural world (which God designed) so often inspires the built, or man-made world.
3. Take a break : go outside with your cellphone, and photograph images from both worlds, matching either form ( the appearance, look, colour, or shape of an object) or function (how something is used, how it works.)
For example, in the picture above, the cicada insect has inspired the form of the dress. The bird's hanging nest has inspired both the form and the function of the hanging swing, to provide a safe resting place.
4. Add your own photos to a board/section in your Pinterest, titled 'Natural/Built World'. Add more images from Pinterest or Google to create a group of images that help you see how we as designers are so often 'imitators' of a creative God, letting His designs, themes, and structures shape and inspire ours.
5. Create an A4 landscape format 'slide', similar to a PPT or Google Slide, with your favorite four pairs of images. At least four of the images must be your own photographs! Please include a simple source list at the bottom of your slide so we know which are your images.
EXPANSION ACTIVITY: Choose one natural image to inspire a fabric design. Draw your own motif and make it a seamless repeat, then upload it to Spoonflower and view it as a fabric. If you like, order a fat quarter swatch!

This student designer chose to focus on function, rather than form. She paired her own photos, with blue borders, against images found on Pinterest, to which she added green borders.

Hint: You can use any style, font, colour choice, or layout, as long as we can see the clear connection between the natural and the built world in your pairs of images. You may include some text if you think it will not be clear. You can choose to pair either images with similar form or similar function, or both!
